How to make a pinata DIY at home just like Piñatas Ponte Huevos

This easy-to-follow tutorial will teach you how to make a diy pinata just like Piñatas Ponte Huevos does for those fun family events and maybe even for just any special occasion. You can make your own piñata using very basic and cheap supplies such as cardboard, tissue paper and glue. It’s sure to be a hit at your next party.

    Materials needed/Materiales necesitados:

Glue –  Preferably at home glue, (tutorial on how to make glue at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8ipSODdpuE) but can be any type of glue including just a gluestick if at home DIY glue isn’t accessible

Empty cereal box – For the smaller flaps to put the filling in, and can be used for those smaller details

Tissue paper – Any preferred colors that you’d like to use for your piñata

Masking tape- any inexpensive masking tape

Scissors – to make fringe from the tissue paper

Cardboard – this will be used as the actual base for your piñata chingon. The thicker the cardboard, the harder it will be to break. Just keep that in mind.

Thick twine/pipe cleaners – So you can hang up your piñata and get to work on your new piñata!

How to start making your piñata chingon

    Step 1

Start by cutting your desired shape out of your cardboard. Cut out two identical pieces of your shape. The dimensions are completely up to you.

    Step 2

Next, proceed to slice portions from your cereal box for application along the piñata’s flanks. In the case of this 18-inch tall piñata, the segments should measure three inches in width.

The width at which you slice these segments will dictate the overall depth and thickness of your piñata. If you’re crafting a larger piñata, you might opt for broader strips, while for a smaller piñata, a somewhat narrower choice would be suitable.

    Step 3

Construct the piñata’s form by connecting the cardboard figures and cereal box strips with masking tape. Ensure that the edges align neatly and employ an ample amount of masking tape to guarantee the complete closure of the piñata.

The masking tape serves a dual purpose in fortifying the piñata, as it must support the weight of the contents you plan to place inside. Be sure to keep one end of your piñata open and untaped at the top to facilitate the filling process!

    Step 4

Afterward, get your tissue paper ready for wrapping the piñata. Begin by keeping the tissue paper folded just as it arrives in a new package, and utilize scissors to trim a two-inch-wide strip from the folded tissue paper.

then, craft a fringed effect by cutting approximately halfway up one side of the folded tissue paper. Unfold it, and you’ll have a lengthy strand of tissue paper with fringes. Repeat this procedure using as many colors as you desire!

    Step 4 (Pt 2)

Once all your tissue paper is fringed and prepared, take your glue stick and begin affixing the fringed sections to the piñata shape, commencing at the base and progressing upwards.

Keep in mind that you should overlap the tissue, ensuring that only the fringed portion is visible. The non-fringed segment is what you will adhere to the cardboard, and it will be concealed by the subsequent layer of tissue paper that is attached on top of it.

Iterate this method while progressing up the piñata. Personalize the colors you select according to the theme of the birthday party or the specific event you are commemorating.

    Step 5

Once you have completely cloaked the piñata with fringe, carefully puncture small openings on the open flap at the pinnacle and corresponding openings on the section that is affixed with tape.

Thread a pipe cleaner or twine through these openings to secure the top of the piñata. Subsequently, you can employ the pipe cleaner or twine to suspend it from a tree branch!

Tips for making your pinata chingon

When preparing your materials, bear in mind that for a piñata of this size (18″ tall) and utilizing 2″ fringe strips, you’ll require roughly the same quantity of fringe strips as twice the height, which in this instance amounts to about 36 strips of fringe.

If cereal boxes are not readily available, you can substitute them with any thin cardboard.

Crafting piñatas is a relatively straightforward process, but it can be somewhat time-consuming, so plan in advance and allocate time for the crafting.

Do not concern yourself with achieving absolute perfection! Piñatas are enjoyable, and they are intended to be broken, so there’s no need to stress over making them entirely flawless.

Now that you’ve made your pinata just how Piñatas Ponte Huevos makes them, there’s only one thing left to do: Give that pinata a beating. Hopefully this tutorial came in handy and now you and your family can enjoy good quality pinatas for the low. Enjoy !
